Commonly Asked Questions

Why is this an online event rather than in person?

We wanted to give everyone the opportunity to join the event, regardless of their location and the state of Covid-19 in their area. Plus, it’s really hard to represent a sunken city in real life.

Does my character need to be a criminal to attend? It seems very murder inc-focused.

Any character that attends must pick up any level of the Criminal Influence skill before the event. We are planning on focusing heavily on the murder inc aspects of the post-apocalypse.

What is the overall schedule?

We will be aiming for modules that have multiple starting every 15 minutes. Modules are going to be written with 60 minutes in mind so that they can run from 60 minutes to 90 minutes. We are not doing 2 or 3 hour module blocks because our intent is to allow players to sign up for multiple modules for a single day experience. If we did 3 hour modules most of them would run for 3.5 hours (see punctuality of gamers). That would be 7 hours of dedicated online RP time, which doesn’t allow for being involved in the larger story. We do not want to run this event as a multiple day event because we want to have a single serving highly busy experience instead of a slower multiple day event which will have very large high and low online populations.

Why no refunds on tickets?

The full refund policy is outlined on ticket purchase, but the primary reason we don’t offer refunds is because we hire more staff to match the number of people that buy tickets. When more people buy tickets, we hire more writers and staff, which increases the cost to run the event for the people attending. If you buy an attending ticket, you are part of a count for “total staff we need to support attendees”. So we are very up front that we can’t do refunds.

If I have multiple characters, can I switch them out?

Only if they all have a level of Criminal Influence. If they don’t have a level of Criminal Influence, you cannot play them at this event.

Can I attend as a character bent on subverting criminals and murder inc as a whole?

We strongly suggest that you don’t and instead attend in the spirit of the event, which is all about making criminal connections. This is largely because if you did attend with the goal of subverting Murder Inc, you’d be acting as an antagonist to everyone else attending the event. This would mean you would immediately have to be flagged for CvC and may be murdered by not just other players, but also casted characters. We hope that you’ll instead choose to attend this event in the spirit that it was written in, and instead focus on murdering outside threats rather than all of the casted characters and attendees of said event.

What’s the deal with crafting?

This event will largely focus on story, so we will not have crafting at the event. However, you will receive a small grab bag of Murder Inc-focused items. If you have resource production skills or crafting skills, you’ll also have the opportunity to fill out a form to say what you’d like to produce or craft for 5 hours. For more information on that, check out our conflict resolution rules.

The promo video i saw said december. why is the event now in january?

Originally, our event date was December 18th. Unfortunately before Kyle could inform the other games, a lot of them booked that date for their game. In order to make sure we weren’t running on top of anyone else’s game (or over any holidays in December), we decided to shift things over to January.

Why is the event being so open with murder inc? isn’t it meant to be secret?

We realized that by keeping Murder Inc in the shadows, we were preventing players who wanted to get involved from enjoying that aspect of play. This event will give anyone who wants to the opportunity to join this secretive organization and learn more about it, and then bring it back to their chapter. We’ll be releasing a story packet for your local game runners that we’ll also make public to you so that you can get involved in the story locally during live play.

Why are you making an event that’s so niche?

We craft events that we’re passionate about, and we’re very passionate about this story. It is a niche event, but one that we’re very excited to bring to anyone who’d like to be involved.

Will this event focus on CvC or Cve?

While CvC (character versus character conflict) can occur based on what characters and players do, we’ll largely focus on CvE (character versus environment) for this event.

Why are you announcing this event so early?

We want to give everyone who wants to join the opportunity to pick up the Criminal Influence skill so that they can play at this event. We figured that announcing it sooner was better than later for this.

Why is this event only one day?

We wanted to make this event intense and action-packed, and realized that with an online format that can be difficult. People come and go from online events that go over multiple days, which means it feels like a smaller turnout even if it isn’t. So, we tightened things up, got some amazing writers, and turned this into a one-day bonanza with roleplay facilitators, module runners, video content, and more. After all, this is Murder Incorporated. We want to do it justice.

My game ran some murder inc things in the past. Will it be continued here?

Sadly, it likely won’t. When a chapter signs up to run a game, it’s given a bubble of influence to work in. Murder Inc is firmly in the national scope of story and isn’t permitted to be used heavily by local games. However, we totally get that Murder Inc wasn’t largely defined in the past. With that in mind, our story revolves around creating local spheres of influence at local chapters…so you and your game runners can bring what you learn at this event back with you and continue your story.

I’ve never heard of murder inc. what is that?

In the history of the game world, Murder Inc was a shadowy organization bent on removing and assassinating threats to post-apocalyptic society. Based in what was once New Orleans, Murder Inc had representatives across the post-apocalyptic world who created their own, local cells. This game moves the narrative forward and explains what happened with Murder Inc and how it influences the game world today.

How does murder inc interact with the red ledger?

Per its description, the Red Ledger is a “group of high-octane mercenaries are deeply invested in violence of all varieties, but specifically the non-meticulous and messy kind.” It is in the best interests of Murder Inc that Red Ledger does everything it is currently doing in its loud high octane way with limitless violence. After all, if you have these over-the-top killers out in the world and someone dies of importance, who is most likely to get blamed? In other words, the two are completely separate groups with one focusing more on the mercenary aspects and the other focusing on assassination and subtlety.

Can I buy a non-attending ticket if my character doesn’t have criminal influence?

Yes, you can buy a non-attending ticket to help support the event even if your character doesn’t have Criminal Influence. If you want to purchase an attending ticket, you have to have the Skill.

Do all of my characters need to have the criminal influence skill for me to attend?

You only need to have Criminal Influence for the characters you plan to play during the event. If you only have one character with that skill, you can only play that character during the event.

Can I attend this event if I have a suspension or a refusal of service?

Since this is a Dystopia Rising national game, we ask that anyone who attends is in good standing with all Dystopia Rising games. With that in mind, you cannot attend if you have a suspension or a refusal of service from a game.

If I have an advanced membership, does the experience apply to all of my characters?

If you have an advanced membership, the experience you purchase applies to all of your characters.

How Does Armor Repair work at the event?

Armor repair works as it normally would during a live event with the same time/mind restrictions. Repairing items may also come up during modules (as an example: repairing a ship engine that has been sabotaged by an opposing faction); your storyteller will guide you through timing and mind expenditures for unique scenarios like that.

Can I learn new skills at the event?

You can absolutely learn skills at the event from other characters as per the normal rules.

Who is the team running this event?

The team consists of storytellers, writers, and larpers that come from Georgia, Florida, New Jersey, Northern California, Southern California, Illinois, and more. Some of them are involved with Dystopia Rising LARP, and some are simply amazing storytellers. Most Improbable itself is a company that hires freelancers to help create amazing events. You can learn more about us here.

Can I stream the event if I’m participating in it?

Not everyone at the event may be onboard with being in a stream, so we ask that you save streaming for another time and instead just enjoy yourself at the event.

I have another question that isn’t answered here. Where can I find the answer?
